The Nasarawa State Government said it will take steps to bring to an end the menace of Almajiri street begging in its effort to fight against crime and criminality.
The Emir of Keffi, Shehu Chindo Yamusa, disclosed this when addressing journalists shortly after an expanded state security meeting held at the Government House, Lafia, at the instance of the state governor, Sule Audu.
According to the emir, “the Almajiri system of education has been existing for over two hundred years therefore, an inventory of such schools including their teachers and locations will be taken to get rid of streets begging.”
“The state will separate the Almajiri system of education from street begging.”
Also, the emir of Lafia and chairman of the Nasarawa State council of chiefs, Justice Sidi Bage (rtd), was optimistic that traditional rulers in the state would now fight against crime and criminality having been given the rightful place in that direction.
Also speaking, the chairman of Lafia Local Government Area and chairman of Assocition of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Aminu Maipata, said the meeting agreed on establishment of the Federal Government’s Ruga settlements for herdsmen in the state.
The Local Government boss explained that the security meeting deemed it fit to establish the Ruga settlements in order to curtail the persistent crisis between the herdsmen and farmers in Nasarawa State.
The state commissoner of police, Bola Longe, on his part stated that the expanded security meeting discussed extremely on the architecture of insecurity before the state.
“We discovered that Nasarawa State is surrounded by five states with insecurity problems. However, the security operatives in the state are leaving no stone unturned by maintaining surveillance on all roads leaking the state from the five states,” CP Longe said.
