The Nasarawa State government has welcomed the landmark judgment of the Supreme Court granting autonomy to local governments. The judgment, delivered on July 11, 2024, in Suit No: SC/CV/343/2004, has been hailed as a significant milestone in the evolution of democracy and good governance in Nigeria.
According to the Honourable Attorney-General of Nasarawa State, Labaran Shuaibu Magaji Esq, in a press statement sent to Journalist on Friday stressed that “This judgment marks a significant milestone in the evolution of our democracy and the protection of local government funds from undue interference.”
The state government, under the leadership of Engr. Abdullahi Sule has expressed its commitment to upholding the principles of democracy, transparency, and good governance at all levels of government.
“The guarantee of democratic setup at the local government level and the non-tampering with local government funds, which characterize our government, will ensure that resources meant for grassroots development are utilized for the benefit of our people,” Magaji said.
The Supreme Court judgment grants autonomy to local governments, empowering them to make decisions that directly impact the lives of the people they serve. This decision reinforces the principles of federalism and strengthens the foundation of Nigeria’s democratic system.
He said the government has pledged to support and implement the judgment, ensuring that local governments operate independently, transparently, and accountably. “We believe that this autonomy will lead to greater efficiency, improved service delivery, and increased development at the grassroots level,” Magaji said.
The Attorney-General therefore called on all relevant stakeholders, including local government officials, civil society organizations, and the general public, to support the judgment and work together to harness its positive effects for the benefit of communities in the state.
“We can build a stronger, more inclusive, and prosperous Nasarawa State,” Magaji said. “Together, we can make a difference.”
