His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has once again demonstrated his profound understanding of history and governance by taking decisive steps to correct historical imbalances in Adamawa State. As a historian, Governor Fintiri’s recognition of pre-Jihad governance structures is not just a political statement but a testament to his commitment to fairness, inclusivity, and historical accuracy.
The decision to create new Chiefdoms and Emirates aligns with the reality that Adamawa’s traditional governance did not begin with the Fombina Emirate. Before the Jihad of 1804–1809, various ethnic groups had their own systems of leadership, deeply rooted in their cultures and traditions. These structures, though disrupted by the emirate system, remain an essential part of the region’s historical identity.
By acknowledging these pre-existing governance institutions, Governor Fintiri has set a precedent for historical justice. His approach does not seek to erase the contributions of the Emirate system but rather to restore balance by giving due recognition to indigenous leadership structures that predate the Jihad. This move fosters unity, cultural pride, and a more representative traditional governance system in Adamawa State.
It takes courage, wisdom, and a deep sense of history to challenge entrenched narratives and embrace an inclusive governance model. Governor Fintiri has proven himself to be a leader who values historical truth over convenience, justice over selective preservation, and inclusivity over exclusion. His actions reaffirm his commitment to a progressive Adamawa State where every cultural and traditional heritage is acknowledged and given its rightful place in history.
For this, history will remember him not only as a governor but as a historian who championed equity in traditional governance.
